Clik here to view.Channing Tatum seems to be perfect, but he admits there's one thing about him that isn't: His parents! Okay, that's kind of a rude thing to admit, but he's got a point when he says that no one's parents are perfect. He's just willing to dish about their imperfections, lucky for us.
Channing just became a daddy to his first child with wife Jenna, a girl whom they've named Everly (how cute!). This has got new dad Channing thinking about how he'd raise his own child. Your mind ruminates on all the things you want to do just like your parents did. And then all of the things you want to do that are the exact opposite of what your parents did.
Channing admits that his father, Glenn, channeled his dreams through him, trying to make him do all of the things he wanted for himself but was unable to do, such as get a good education. Channing's dad apparently was quite the taskmaster when it came to school, and yet Channing was a poor student. He told Vanity Fair:
My dad didn’t have much money growing up; he didn’t have much of an education. He forced that on me, and I didn’t want it.
Because of Channing's learning disabilities, he was put on medication, which had horrible side effects. So he vows never to put his kid on medication, saying:
I truly believe some people need medication. I did not. I did better at school when I was on it, but it made me a zombie. You become obsessive. I would go through wild bouts of depression, horrible comedowns. I understand why kids kill themselves. I absolutely do. You feel terrible. You feel soul-less. I’d never do it to my child.
Yikes, Channing is practically accusing his parents of making him suicidal. At any rate, it appears to be water under the bridge as Channing takes the 'rents to his movie premieres. And what one of us doesn't hate some of the things our parents did to us as kids? It's a time honored tradition to critique your parents' parenting skills ... though sometimes you unexpectedly find yourself admiring them as you begin to realize how complex and difficult raising a child can be.
Maybe Channing will change his tune about several things after Everly can walk and talk. But for now he says that his main goal is to be a "good friend" to his kid.
Uh oh. Sounds like he's going to be an indulgent dad! Hope he doesn't take that "friend" thing too far.
Do you try to do anything differently than your parents did?
