Heads up, parents: Terribly sad baby product recall news today. Angelcare Monitors Inc. is voluntarily recalling 600,000 baby monitors after two infants died from strangulation. (Two other babies became entangled in the company's monitor cords but did not die.) The monitors have a cord connected to a sensor pad that goes under the crib mattress; this cord can be pulled into the crib with the baby and pose a strangulation risk. Here's everything you need to know about this recall.
The affected products are Angelcare Movement and Sound Monitors With Sensor Pads, including those with model numbers AC1100, AC201, AC300, AC401 AC601, and 49255. Look for the model number on the back of the monitor.
If you have this product, stop using it immediately and contact Angelcare for a repair kit: Call (855) 355-2643 or click on the safety notice on the company website, AngelcareBaby.com.
The repair kit consists of rigid cord covers that the sensor pads can be threaded through, a warning label, and instructions. The recalled monitors lacked these rigid cord covers.
These are monitors sold between 1999 and 2013 for $100 to $300 at stores including Amazon.com, Babies R Us, Burlington Coat Factory, Meijer, Overstock.com, Sears, Toys R Us, and Walmart. They were also sold at nearly 70 small baby specialty stores.
This is a huge and scary recall -- please let friends and family with babies know. And check out your baby monitors at any rate, because apparently there have been eight reports of strangulation from baby monitors industry-wide since 2002. We'd hate to see even one more report.
