I wish that were true, but there are still too may who think it's an obscene act. So there are nursing areas set up for a little privacy. Perfect. Only when it's not.
Mom CeCe Jarvis went to breastfeed her daughter at the Currituck Family YMCA's designated nursing area. What she discovered behind the door was a beige folding chair next to the toilet. All it needed was a tan folding table and it would be the perfect place for a meal.
Appetizing, isn't it? What effort! What thought went into this! What a comfortable looking chair! I don't know about you, but I love having my lunch next to a toilet bowl.
I think it's time for a little song. Where are the Village People when you need them?
Yeah mom, when it's time for letdown
I said, yeah mom, follow that flushing sound.
I said, yeah mom, 'cause your breasts are so round.
There's no need to be unhappy.
Yeah mom, there's a place you can go.
I said, yeah mom, when your milk's gotta flow.
You can nurse there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to breastfeed just fine.
It's fun to nurse at the Y.M.C.A. It's fun to nurse at the Y.M.C.A.
They have everything for you moms to enjoy
You can hang out with all the toys ...
It's fun to nurse at the Y.M.C.A. It's fun to nurse at the Y.M.C.A.
You can get your baby clean, she can have a good meal,
You can do whatever you feel ...
Yeah mom, is baby ready to eat?
I said, yeah mom, why don't you have a seat?
I said, yeah mom, you can make real breastfeeding dreams.
But you got to know this one thing!
No mom does it all by herself.
I said, yeah mom, put your pride on the shelf,
And just go there, to the Y.M.C.A.
I'm sure they can help you today.
It's fun to nurse at the Y.M.C.A. It's fun to nurse at the Y.M.C.A.
As it turns out, the YMCA wants to help this mom, and all moms, today. They recognize the issue with the folding chair next to the toilet, and have since moved the nursing area to an executive office. They now see that the bathroom is a place for elimination ... not consumption. Progress!
What do you think of the folding chair next to the toilet? What would you have done if this is what you saw when you went to the nursing area?
