5 Tips to Prevent Diaper Rash

When my now-kindergartner was a baby, it seemed like he had diaper rash all the time. It didn’t take us long to figure out that the best way for us to deal with diaper rash was to prevent it from starting in the first place! Especially since stubborn rashes were often tricky to get rid of. Now that we have a second child in diapers, we’ve figured out better ways to help keep our baby’s skin healthy and rash-free.

Sitting in a soiled diaper is a primary cause of diaper rash, so it’s important to keep your little one’s rear end clean and dry. Yes, that will sometimes mean a new diaper when you just changed one five minutes ago, but the extra diaper change is infinitely easier to deal with than an unpleasant rash! At every diaper change, apply a generous layer of Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment as a moisture barrier to help protect baby’s skin. It’s hypoallergenic and paraben free – a perfect option for frequent use. You want to pay attention to how tightly you fasten diapers, too. I used to put my baby’s diaper on pretty tight to try to avoid any up-the-shirt explosions, but it turns out that putting a diaper on too snugly restricts the amount of airflow and can contribute to a rash. Because you’ll be changing your baby’s diaper more frequently, you need to be careful about the way you do it. Don’t wipe too aggressively – gently clean the skin without much rubbing. (And if your baby does develop a diaper rash, clean the diaper area by soaking your baby’s bottom in warm water and a gentle, fragrance free wash - try Aquaphor Baby Wash & Shampoo - instead of using wipes.) Whenever possible, let your baby run-around diaper-free so her skin can be exposed to air. You can place absorbent pads or towels on the floor during playtime to make it easier to clean up any messes.

What’s your preferred way to prevent diaper rash?
