New Mom Secret: I Use a Used Car Seat

It's hard being a new mom (or even an experienced mom to a new baby) and sometimes we do things we know we shouldn't, despite what all the experts say. But this is a safe place to share your secrets (PM me)—we'll never tell.

This Week's Secret:

My son is 6 months old and we've had him in the bucket car seat I borrowed from a friend for the past few months, but now he is getting big and we're switching him to the convertible seat. I didn't have any friends who would give me theirs and I couldn't afford to spend $300 on a new one. So I bought a used one on Craigslist. Is that terrible? — Anonymous

Unless you get it from a friend and it was made in the last five years, then yes, getting a used car seat is a terrible idea.

You just don't know what happened to that seat. Was it dropped? Did someone get into an accident with it? If so, it shouldn't be used. Car seats are the one place a person should splurge. Get the best, safest, and most secure option available. And get it new.

Do you have any advice for this mom?
