Wendy Williams doesn't make a habit of treading lightly on the news of the day, but the talk show host is currently facing serious backlash for one strong, controversial conviction. While discussing Karlesha Thurman, the college grad who posted a picture of herself breastfeeding her daughter at her graduation ceremony, Wendy expressed her staunch opposition to breastfeeding in public, stating, "I am all for breastfeeding, but do not like breastfeeding in public. I don’t want to see it at my kitchen table, I don’t want to see it at Target, I don’t want to see it at Starbucks, in the airplane -- and I especially don’t want to see it at graduation.”
Oh boy ... No wonder people are flipping out!
Not only because Wendy's doing absolutely nothing to help fellow women fight rampant breastfeeding discrimination with her remarks, but because she looks like a TOTAL hypocrite. Back in November 2012, Wendy debuted her nude ad campaign for PETA, saying in a statement:
We should all try to be comfortable in our own skin and let the animals keep theirs.
Rrrrright. Comfortable in our own skin, but not so comfortable that we can't feed our little ones while we're trying to go about our lives -- in public? And at the same time, the masses should be perfectly okay with "seeing" Wendy's nude bod on a huge billboard in Times Square! Ridiculous.
It's just plain disheartening. As a strong, outspoken woman with a national platform to express her opinions, Wendy could easily be lending a hand to moms in this country having to fight with their employers to get a safe, clean space to pump, or others who are being harassed and thrown out of courts for trying to nurse their babies while waiting for hours for their case to be heard. If she really was "all for breastfeeding" as she claims, she would be doing what she could to make it easier for moms to do it whenever, wherever, however. Instead, her stubborn lash-out only serves to reinforce a close-minded view. What a shame.
